Today, I’d like to welcome UK author Zanna Mackenzie to tell us more about her new release And The Earth Moved (Amber Reed CCIA Mystery Book One).
To whet everyone’s appetite, let’s start with the fantastic cover and something about the story …
One desperate phone call is all it takes to turn Amber’s day from boring to completely crazy.
The call? Her old university boyfriend Ennis, now a heartthrob actor, begs for Amber’s help.
His brother Joel is dead and Ennis has to discover the truth about his death before the world’s media hear about it and batter his door down demanding answers.
The CCIA has already assigned its top agent, Charlie Huxton, to the case.
Amber’s mission? Ennis doesn’t trust a stranger to keep quiet so he pleads with Amber to shadow and help Charlie throughout the investigation. Ennis was her first love and she still has a soft spot for him – how can she refuse?
Scarily out of her depth Amber knows she needs to somehow get Charlie on side with her involvement in the case – and fast.
Plunged into the world of crime Amber’s battling something darker and far more dangerous than she’d imagined – and it has nothing to do with the equally scary chemistry fizzing between her and Charlie.
Will Charlie agree to work with her to find out how and why Joel died?
Can she help uncover the truth before word gets out and an already distraught Ennis is hounded by story-hungry journalists?
Just as importantly, can she keep her sanity and still be alive when the mystery is finally solved?

Zanna, it sounds like great fun! Tell me …
What was the initial kernel of an idea that got you started writing a cozy mystery romance series?
I had fought against getting a Kindle for a long time, being very much a paperback person. I eventually relented and purchased a basic Kindle because there were so many excellent books I wanted to read which were only available as ebooks. Being able to try ebooks opened up my reading opportunities significantly and I began to read romantic suspense and comedy cozy mystery books as well as my usual romantic comedy and contemporary romance. I found myself drawn more and more to cozy mystery books and consequently found my thoughts and my writing veering towards that genre too. My previous (published) books are romantic comedy / contemporary romances so to prepare for switching to writing in a different genre I decided to do a lot of research and then give it a go. The idea for book 1 in the series just evolved out of nowhere and I couldn’t write fast enough to keep up with the plot twists after that!
What is your heroine Amber’s most admirable quality?
Ooh, tricky…. maybe it’s her determination. In And The Earth Moved, the first book in the Amber Reed CCIA Mystery series, she faces a lot of challenges but she tries her best to put on a brave face and battle through them.
Can you give us a little peek into love-interest Charlie’s personality?
He’s a bit of a workaholic, can be stubborn, nosy and serious when it comes to his agency work but he can also be funny, friendly, encouraging and charming when his mind isn’t on work!
Are you planning to write more in the same series?
Yes, book two is already available and I have book three outlined and am hoping it will be published in spring 2015.
And now a little about you …
Where do you do your writing?
Either in front of the computer, typing it up as I write, or the old fashioned way with a pad and pen in a notebook anywhere at any time – then I have to type it all onto the computer.
If you could have your dream space to write, where or what would it be?
I’d have a shaker-style log cabin in the garden. I’d love it to have a log burner so my fingers don’t freeze in the winter whilst I’m writing and I’d love it to have French doors I can open wide in the summer and enjoy the garden as I work.
Oh, I like the sound of that! I fancy a little cabin in the garden myself, but with the British weather being what it is, decided it wouldn’t get much use. I hadn’t considered a log burner!
Now, this is an old question, but I always find it so telling! If you were stuck on a desert island …
Your top 3 movies?
The Adjustment Bureau. A romantic suspense film with a very unusual plot which hooks you in from the start. There’s also wonderful chemistry between the two main characters who are played by the amazing Emily Blunt and excellent Matt Damon.
The Vow. A gripping romantic comedy / drama which made me cry and smile at the same time at the ending.
In Time. A romantic suspense with another unusual plot. Fantastic acting and a big-smile ending.
Your top 3 books?
Oooh, this is almost impossible, there are so many brilliant books out there. If really pushed I’d probably opt for:
Martina Reilly – Even Better Than The Real Thing. I think this book is a fantastic mix of romance and intrigue with a fascinating, slightly unusual plot.
Evonne Wareham – Out of Sight Out of Mind. A very unusual story with romance and mystery which really pulls you in. The chemistry between the two main characters was outstanding and I think this book has the best first line I have ever read in a novel.
Kate Johnson – Still Waters. I love the Sophie Green Mysteries and this book is number 4 in the series. It combines comedy, mystery and suspense. I think the chemistry between Luke and Sophie is the best ongoing relationship I’ve read across any series of books – they are my absolute favourite characters. All of the books in this series are, I think, wonderful but this one is my favourite because of the setting, which I can totally relate to.
Top 3 albums?
I tend to play an album all of the time for a few weeks and then completely go off it and never play it again so my music tastes are varied to say the least. I like rock and pop mostly but also enjoy country, classical and big band swing dance Sinatra type music as well.
Favourite three albums, mmm, probably subject to change in a few weeks, but at the moment I’d go for:
The Script – No Sound Without Silence
One Republic – Native
Foster The People – Torches
Great getting to know you, Zanna! Thank you for visiting.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Being a freelance writer and editor of business publications is her ‘day job’ but, at every opportunity, she can be found scribbling down notes on scenes for whatever novel she’s working on. She loves it when the characters in her novels take on minds of their own and start deviating from the original plot!
